HISTORY
Much of central and western Colorado was inhabited mostly by Ute Indians until the late 1800s. The land making up the Surface Valley Creek was ceded to the United States in 1880. The town of Cedaredge was officially incorporated in 1907 by a group of ranchers.
AMENITIES
Delta County provides suitable amenities for its large retirement community and also features a strong agricultural industry. Beef, apples, peaches and wine grapes are among the major crops produced locally. Medical services are available at Delta County Memorial Hospital, Community Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital and Montrose Memorial Hospital as well as two medical clinics in Cedaredge. Cedaredge Schools operate within the Delta County School District and offer three schools for K-12 students. Higher educational needs are met by Colorado State University Research Center – Rogers Mesa, Technical College of the Rockies, Colorado Mesa University and Colorado Mountain College.
RECREATION
The Grand Mesa, which Cedaredge sits atop, soars some 11,000 feet covering 600 square miles. The Surface Creek Valley is a recreational paradise and destination for big game hunting featuring access to Grand Mesa National Forest, Uncompahgre Plateau, Gunnison National Forest, Grand Mesa Scenic Byway, Land O’Lakes Area, Black Canyon, Powderhorn Ski Resort, Cedaredge Golf Club and much more. Pioneer Town is a museum and historical village of a former cattle ranch established in the 1800s. Applefest, started in 1978 as Cedaredge Harvest Festival, is an annual celebration of apples, art, music and food held each October. The Western Slope Little Britches Rodeo and Parade dates back to 1958.
CLIMATE
Temperatures are moderate throughout the year with four sunny seasons in western Colorado. On average, there are 205 days of sunshine in Cedaredge each year. Precipitation falls in the form of 50 inches of snow and 15 inches of rain annually with 85 days of measurable precipitation.
