Thinking about moving to the Western Slope of Colorado? Nestled under the Grand Mesa, Cedaredge is a small town with a big personality and the perfect choice if you’re looking for local charm, flourishing agriculture, and tons of outdoor recreation.

Read on to discover five things that make Cedaredge a worthy contender for your next home.

1. Diverse Geography

Cedaredge belongs to Delta County which is situated between Mesa County to the north and west, Montrose County to the south, and Gunnison County to the east. Drive an hour outside of Cedaredge in any direction and you’re met with completely unique and beautiful scenery. You can explore the outdoors at Colorado National Monument and later soak up the small-town charm during a walk down Main Street.

Cedaredge itself sits at approximately 6,100 feet in elevation. It’s positioned on the southern slope of the Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-top mountain, which means mountain runoff is a plentiful natural resource for fueling the agricultural economy.

2. Agricultural History

Cedaredge is home to a rich tradition of agriculture and ranching. Settled in the early 1900s, the Cedaredge area quickly became a farming and ranching community. Settlers tapped into the plentiful water storage from natural lakes and man-made reservoirs on the Grand Mesa.

Even today, miles of ditches and creeks flowing down from the Grand Mesa deliver water to the farms and ranches located around the Surface Creek Valley. The Surface Creek Valley gently slopes from the Grand Mesa down to the Gunnison River Valley to the south.

The plentiful water, nutrient-rich soil, and temperate climate undoubtedly contribute to the area’s reputation for tasty apples, peaches, and other varieties of fruits and vegetables.

3. Small Population

There are about 2,000 residents in Surface Creek Valley, which encompasses the towns of Cedaredge and Orchard City (which also contains the communities of Eckert, Cory, and Austin). This makes Cedaredge a clear choice for families who crave small-town goodwill for raising their children, ranchers who want to take advantage of the spacious land, and retirees who are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city.

4. Local Charm

Cedaredge fosters a strong sense of community through the many local events that take place throughout the year. Residents flock to Main Street for the Parade of Lights, Fourth of July celebration, and high school parades. The town park is home to concerts featuring local and traveling artists alike.

The best part about these events is that they are put on for the community, by the community. If Cedaredge is on your radar, you can’t miss the annual Serenity Run, Chili Cookoff, Little Britches Rodeo, and - last but certainly not least - the annual AppleFest celebration in October.

5. Lively Recreation

Whether you’re looking for the best place to raise kids, grow your farm, or retire on the Western Slope, Cedaredge has a host of amenities and shops that appeal to everyone. It’s a welcome home to locally-owned restaurants, coffee houses, hobby shops, and museums.

Cedaredge offers lots to explore outdoors too. Its proximity to the Grand Mesa National Forest gives residents access to over 34,000 acres for mountain recreation. That means hiking in the sunny summers and skiing at Powderhorn in the winter. You can also seek solace at the Cedaredge Golf Club, an 18-hole public golf course with excellent scenery and affordable green fees.
